Charles Baudelaire (1821-1867) est l’un des plus grands poètes français, précurseur du symbolisme et de la modernité poétique. Son célèbre recueil de poèmes, Les Fleurs du mal, fut publié en 1857 par Auguste Poulet-Malassis à Alençon, en Normandie. Le Chat est issu de ce recueil. Il est ici accompagné d’aquarelles.
