Christine Laverne and Georges Bronner

From the Durance to the Vaucluse Mountains

Leaving behind the coastal landscapes of Provence, this guide aims to take the reader to another paradise, northern Provence, between the Durance and Ventoux, the Luberon and the Vaucluse mountains. Amidst its hilltop villages, harmoniously integrated into the landscape, and its flamboyantly colored rocks, the riches of the Tertiary era are revealed. The wonderfully preserved remains of a teeming life reveal bygone landscapes that man can reconstruct through imagination, the exuberant biodiversity of the Oligocene forests, the aridity of the salt-laden sebkhas, or the vast grassy steppes populated by the first large mammals.

This guide, created at the initiative of the Luberon Regional Natural Park, aims to contribute to raising awareness of the exceptional geological wealth of this region.

It thus forms, with the two previous Geonautical Guides – Provence cristalline and Provence calcaire – a trilogy which covers the geological history of more than 500 million years that Provence reveals through its landscapes.

From the Durance to the Vaucluse Mountains

Leaving behind the coastal landscapes of Provence, this guide takes the reader to another paradise, northern Provence, between the Durance and Ventoux, Luberon and Vaucluse mountains. Amidst these village perched and harmoniously integrated in the landscape, and these colorful flamboyant rocks preserved despite the bustling life, the riches of the Tertiary Era are revealed. This well preserved evidence from a busy period uncovers the changed landscapes that men can recreate via imagination: the exuberant biodiversity of the oligocene forests, the arid salted sebkhas and the vast steppes of grains peopled by the first huge mammals.

This guidebook, an initiative of the Luberon Natural Regional Park, aims to contribute to our knowledge of this region’s outstanding geological riches. It also makes up a trilogy with the two preceding geonatutical guides, crystaline Provence and calcareous Provence, covering the geological history of over 500 million years unveiled throughout the Provence landscapes.
